Helena Starzec (b. 2003) is an artist from Massachusetts, currently based in Pittsburgh, PA. She is pursing a BFA from the Carnegie Mellon School of Art, studying painting and creative writing. Her body of work examines the recurring visual imagery associated with obsession, intrusion and her upbringing in coastal New England. Within her practice, Starzec utilizes a language of symbols and vignettes to connect images across time and medium. In addition to working in oil on board and canvas, she addresses the painting as an object. Utilizing found materials, ready-mades and scrap wood to transform her work into pieces of devotion, ripe with intrigue and double-entendres. Starzec embraces an intuitive painting process and celebrates the monotonous and tedious side of art making.
